100% sustainable beach replenishments

To protect the Belgian coast against climate change, we need sand. Lots of sand! In Raversijde, we installed no less than 500,000 cubic metres of sand on the beach, dredged in the North Sea. This will allow the beach to retain its natural coastal dynamics and break up heavy wave attacks during storms. In total, we are restoring 4.5 km of beach length.

In this project, our fight against climate change is not limited to dredging and earthmoving works. Our equipment meets the strictest sustainability standards. For example, our trailing suction hopper dredger Pedro Álvares Cabral runs on 100% sustainable drop-in biofuel during the works. This not only reduces CO2 emissions, but also releases significantly less fine dust into the air.

For the earthworks on the beach, we mobilised the most advanced bulldozers and excavators, all equipped with exhaust gas filter systems. On site, our team disposes of the latest generation of ecological site offices, equipped with high-insulating materials. This reduces our CO2 emissions by 90%. We reduce our NOx emissions and energy consumption in the site offices by 80%. An absolute world’s first: we are the first dredging company to work completely sustainably.
