Meet David, an upbeat twenty-something from Antwerp. In May 2023, he participated in VDAB’s action days. There, he discovered the profession of formworker. Ten months later, after a more than successful internship with us, David was able to start a permanent position here. Just before summer, VDAB visited David at the construction site of the new Antwerp Prison.
VDAB was curious to see how David was doing today and what steps he took on his journey to his new job. They want to share David's inspiring story with others interested in a career in construction. Join us for a behind-the-scenes look during the filming.
David's Journey
David's journey began in early May 2023, when he signed up for VDAB’s action days. On the first day, David tried his hand at scaffolding, industrial insulation, and painting. The second day featured jobs such as road worker and formworker. The latter really appealed to him. In June 2023, he started a training course for formworkers.
The final step in the formworker training was an internship at an active construction site. For this, VDAB connected David with us. After a meeting with the site management, David started work in early February 2024 at the Antwerp Prison construction site.
After a successful 3.5-week internship, David was offered a permanent contract. On March 1, 2024, he began working as an all-round construction site employee. This role involves working in various areas on the site, sometimes as a formworker, but also as a groundworker or setting up the site infrastructure.
In the meantime, David has not been idle and has obtained his certification to operate a lifting and hoisting device, better known as a Manitou. His next goal? Learning to operate one of the many construction cranes on the site where he is currently working.
