Always looking for the most efficient solution.

Last year, I started working at Jan De Nul as a Structural Design Engineer for MDED (Marine Design & Engineering Department). Specifically, I make structural calculations to check whether the structures that will be installed on board are strong enough. Based on the results of those calculations, I check whether the design must be modified. The challenge is to find the most efficient solution, both financially and practically, because space on deck is of course limited. An additional challenge is that you receive very diverse assignments, but I love that kind of variation and I learn something new with every assignment.

I spend a lot of time at my desk making all the calculations, but sometimes I also go to the workshop to follow up the execution of projects I have worked on. Almost every time I am surprised by the size of the constructions. Everything happens on a large scale here, obviously, but usually the result is even larger than I had imagined. I am currently working on a quadrant handling system to install submarine cables. Since this is the largest project I have worked on so far, I am really looking forward to seeing it come to fruition!
