Amongst others, Jan De Nul Group is a uniquely capable and experienced partner for dredging and reclamation projects as well as for offshore marine construction services including the development of offshore wind farms. With combined expertise in project management, engineering, procurement, fabrication and marine construction services, Jan De Nul Group delivers these services in a comprehensive array of contractual structures. We are looking for a fulltime Legal Counsel to join our legal team.

Position

As Legal Counsel dedicated to the offshore and dredging business of the Jan De Nul Group you will participate in the tendering for offshore and dredging projects worldwide. In that capacity, the identification, analysis and management of legal and contractual risks are of utmost importance.
Your position will mainly focus on commercial law and construction law, both on national and international level.

You will play a key role in the preparation and submission of tender proposals to our customers. This also includes setting up joint ventures with partners and subcontracting. You will advise the area management, tender and project managers. You will work in close cooperation with your colleagues in the legal department and with the technical, operational, commercial, and financial departments. You will also be directly involved in contract negotiations. In your function, you will not only defend legal interests, but you will also pay attention to the technical, operational, commercial and financial aspects.

You will be based in Aalst (Belgium) and occasionally be required to travel abroad on short business trips. As a result, you’ll have Internationally oriented work in a dynamic organisation with the possibility to truly have an impact on our business. With a healthy work-life balance, working from home from time to time is an option.
Your main tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Analysing tender documents (both for public and private customers), identifying legal and contractual risks and providing hands-on advice to mitigate such risks;
  • Drafting and revising different types of commercial contracts (construction works contracts, engineering contracts, subcontracts, joint venture agreements, shareholders agreements, ...) and participate in contract negotiations;
  • Follow up of disputes (amicably and arbitration) in cooperation with the project team and, where necessary, external lawyers.

Profile

Profile

You hold a master’s degree in law, with at least 3 years relevant job experience , preferably as a lawyer or in-house counsel in an international environment. You have experience with commercial law and construction law. You have interest to deepen your knowledge in marine offshore and dredging projects.

You have strong analytical skills and written communication is one of your strong points. You have a hands-on no-nonsense mentality, are business minded and solution oriented. You are a team player but also able to work independently and manage priorities. You are pragmatic, open-minded, flexible and stress resistant. You show a talent for negotiating and drafting complex contracts and transactions. You are fluent in Dutch and English. Knowledge of other languages (in particular French, German and/ Spanish) is considered a plus.

You are flexible and prepared to travel abroad for short business trips.
